What is Laser Therapy?
The low level laser therapy used at this facility is the use of specific wavelengths of infra red light to create therapeutic effects. These effects include improved healing time, pain reduction, increased circulation and decreased swelling. The light is provided by a medical piece of equipment called a low level or cold laser.
Will it be painful or will I feel anything?
No, the therapy is painless and totally non-invasive.
Is Low Level Therapy safe?
Yes, the FDA has ruled that the therapy is safe. The only contraindication (warning) is for use directly in the eye.
What is its history?
The effects of red light on cellular function have been known since 1880; however, the clinical benefits were only discovered by accident during laser safety tests in 1967. About ten years later, low power lasers became commercially available for pain management and have been widely used in Europe by doctors, nurses, and physical therapists. In 2001, due to U.S. military need for fast injury healing, the FDA approved laser therapy.
Has effectiveness been demonstrated scientifically?
Yes. There are thousands of published studies demonstrating the clinical effectiveness of laser therapy. Among these, there are more than one hundred rigorously controlled, scientific studies that document the effectiveness of laser for many clinical conditions.
What does the research demonstrate?
•Injuries treated with laser therapy heal faster
•Laser Therapy has a strengthening effect on tissue repair
•Laser Therapy improves blood flow and lymphatic drainage
•It is an effective means of relief for many pain syndromes
•It can improve immune response
Are there any side effects or associated risks?
During more than twenty years of use by healthcare providers all over the world, very few side effects have ever been reported. If a patient is allergic to light, they may get a rash or blister for a few days. Occasionally, some old injuries or pain syndromes may feel aggravated for a few days, as the healing response is more active after treatment.
What if I have tried other things before trying low level laser therapy?
While there are some treatments or conditions that will affect the frequency used, the only reason the laser would not be used immediately is if you have received or taken steroids within the last two weeks.
